Can You Really Make Money Socializing?
Social media is the hot topic in the world of Internet marketing. The rapid growth and previously unimagined popularity of Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and other social networking options has created a frenzy as online entrepreneurs look for ways to monetize what is now one of the Internet’s dominant activities.
Does socializing work?
In a sense, social networking is one of the best things to happen to Internet marketers in years. As a primary method of generating traffic and marketing products, however, it leaves a lot to be desired.
“In other words, social networking can work to your advantage – but not in the ways many marketers wish it would”.
Traffic generated via social networking tends to convert at much lower rates than other targeted traffic. Study and after study confirms the fact that PPC and search engine traffic performs better than the traffic you can drive by sharing a link with your Twitter followers or FaceBook friends.
Meanwhile, the community attitude toward overt marketing within social networking spaces isn’t what you’d call “friendly”. If you plan on leveraging your involvement in online socialization into instant profits, you’re going to be working harder than what’s necessary to generate an income.
Don’t get me wrong. You can use your social networking to boost your business directly. The traffic you get from social websites can be valuable and it can produce sales. Overall, however, there are better ways of handling those tasks.
Think of social networking’s “direct benefits” as secondary to the other advantages of participation.
You have a unique chance to make contact and to build relationships with those who may help your business. You get a golden opportunity to build your reputation and credibility within your field.
The advantages of social networking aren’t much different from the advantages of face-to-face networking in the brick and mortar world. It’s just that the new online options make the process more efficient and allow us to access more interesting people and opinions than ever before.
I recommend that all Internet marketers learn to take advantage of socializing and social media.
You should know how to use Twitter. You should have a LinkedIn profile and a FaceBook account. You should use them, too. However, you should do so with a clear idea of their real value in mind.
